Tour to Vesuvius

The volcano is famous for its eruption in 79 AD. It buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as many other settlements.
The eruption hurled rock, ash and smoke 33 kilometers into the air and spewed lava and pulverized pumice at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second. It ultimately released 100,000 times the heat energy of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. An estimated 16,000 people died as a result of hydrothermal pyroclastic flows.
The only surviving eyewitness of the event is a letter written by Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus.
