The archaeological site is famous throughout the world because it represents an extraordinary example of ancient Roman life. Pompeii was rediscovered in 1738 when workers dug the foundations of the summer palace of Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples.
It was rediscovered in 1748 after a deliberate excavation by the Spanish military engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre. These cities were later excavated and many intact buildings and murals were discovered. Even after becoming King of Spain, Charles of Bourbon was very interested in these finds because the exhibition of the finds increased the political and cultural power of Naples.
